The Club

Club History

Instigated by Mr Morton from Hull, a small group of members owners gathered together and a club was first inaugurated on 14th February 1937.  Although small in number, the members were enthusiastic and many competed in their cars, notably at Prescott and Shelsley Walsh hill-climbs.  However, by the autumn of 1938, the club had lost its separate identity and was incorporated into the Bugatti Owners Club.

By 1954 interest had revived and the Club was re-formed in 1954 at a meeting in the Red Lion Hotel in Basingstoke, and then operated as a section of the Vintage Sports Car Club.  The first AGM was held at The Swan’s Nest in Stratford on Avon on 13th November 1955 and by then the membership was around 40, rising to 59 by 1959 with a hard core of members taking part in competition events.  A six- weekly newsletter entitled ‘The Secretary’s Cauldron’ had been introduced and in 1966 this was supplemented by another newsletter entitled ‘100 MPH’ so that 12 publications were issued per year.  However, publication appears to have ceased in 1969 and the section again became dormant- although many Invictas were still seen to be active, most notably Bob Wood in his S Type, ‘Felicity’, during the 1970’s and 80’s.

An informal meeting at Bob Wood’s home eventually saw the Club once again re-formed in 1989 and a quarterly magazine, similar in style to ‘100MPH’ was produced by Simon Bull and his wife, . Kay. Once again, by 1993, the club had collapsed – however the late Laurie Mayhead kept in regular contact with the owners and the Club was eventually and formally reconstituted with Laurie Mayhead as its Chairman in 1969 and has remained active since that date. Following Laurie’s death in 2009, Peter Storrie took over as chairman and has held that position ever since.

The Invicta Car Club now has a stable membership of over 100.  Membership is open to all with an interest in the cars whether owners or not and all are welcome.  The membership consists of an enthusiastic band of friends with a common interest that come from all walks of society and many parts of the world.  Many still use their cars in both race and rally events while others are content to use them for the supreme touring cars that they are.

The Club hosts several major events annually including an AGM, spring and autumn meetings, a concours and a Summer Barbecue. The Club also publishes a quarterly magazine, a list of club members and archives that are held and a register of all cars known.

New members are always welcome — with or without a car. Please check our member recruitment page… thank you!
